The Mechanism of SkinPen

SkinPen Microneedling is a form of collagen induction therapy that relies on precise, controlled mechanical injury. Using fine, sterile needles, the device creates thousands of microscopic channels in the epidermis and upper dermis.

These micro-injuries activate the skin’s natural wound-healing cascade. The process begins with platelet activation and the release of growth factors, which signal fibroblasts to start tissue repair. In the following days and weeks, fibroblasts synthesise new collagen, elastin, and extracellular matrix proteins, gradually remodelling the dermal structure.

As the healing response progresses, collagen fibres realign and strengthen, leading to firmer, smoother skin with improved texture and elasticity. Because the stimulation is mechanical rather than thermal, there is no heat-based damage to surrounding tissue, making SkinPen suitable for all skin types, including those prone to pigmentation or sensitivity.

SkinPen is particularly beneficial for conditions such as acne scarring, enlarged pores, fine lines, and loss of firmness. Visible improvement occurs progressively over several weeks, with cumulative results following a series of treatments spaced four to six weeks apart.

The Mechanism of Laser Genesis

Laser Genesis operates on the principle of thermal stimulation rather than mechanical injury. Using the 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser, the treatment delivers micro-pulses of laser energy that gently heat the dermis without disrupting the skin’s surface.

This controlled thermal exposure creates a sub-lethal heat injury, raising dermal temperature to approximately 42–45°C. At this threshold, fibroblasts are stimulated to increase collagen and elastin production, while blood vessels within the dermis constrict and remodel. This process improves oxygenation, nutrient delivery, and cellular metabolism—resulting in a more even tone, refined texture, and reduction in diffuse redness.

The treatment is comfortable, non-invasive, and requires no downtime. Clients typically experience mild warmth and a temporary flush, followed by progressive improvements in tone, clarity, and firmness with ongoing sessions.

Laser Genesis is especially effective for managing redness, rosacea, enlarged pores, early fine lines, and dullness. Its gentle nature allows it to be performed regularly as part of an ongoing maintenance program to sustain collagen activity and skin vitality.

Comparing the Two

Although both treatments stimulate collagen through controlled injury, the method of stimulation defines their differences. SkinPen physically disrupts the dermal structure to trigger the wound-healing cascade, whereas Laser Genesis uses thermal energy to achieve a similar biological response through heat-induced fibroblast activation.

Both pathways lead to increased collagen synthesis and dermal remodelling, but the depth, intensity, and cellular response differ. SkinPen induces a direct mechanical wound, promoting robust collagen formation and long-term structural change. Laser Genesis works more subtly, enhancing microcirculation, calming inflammation, and supporting consistent collagen renewal over time.
